Yesteryear Collection

Chilworth's industrial past, especially the Gunpowder Mills, created an ongoing demand for fuel in the village. Charcoal, an essential component of gunpowder, was produced locally and stored on site, while coal and coke were imported from outside the area.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was common for coal merchants to supply coal and coke to local homes and businesses, and for farmers or small timber merchants along village roads to sell or deliver firewood and logs.
Many local shops or yards also acted as fuel suppliers, often operating as informal, family-run businesses.
